Category: Edward

July 4-8 we headed over to Sandpoint, ID for Darrell’s Grandma’s 80th birthday party and family reunion. We were a little apprehensive because it was going to be Edwards first big trip. We have taken him a few places in the car and he always did well there, so we were hoping he would be good to go the 6 hour drive there and 6 hours back. At the last minute, we decided to leave on the evening of the 3rd and drive through the night. It worked out great. Darrell drove and stopped when we needed to feed Edward and then Darrell napped while I changed, fed, and got him back in the carseat and ready to go again. Our normal 6 hour drive ended up only taking us about 8 hours. Not to shabby with a newborn. 🙂

We decided to stay with Darrell’s Uncle Adam and Aunt Linda. They have a changing table and a bassinet so it was stuff we wouldn’t have to bring. Plus there was only one other family member staying there, so it wasn’t too overwhelming for Edward. It was nice being able to pass him off to someone else so we could get a break (even though I never went far).

Overall it was a great weekend. Edward went to his first fireworks show and slept through 95% of it (then he started stirring so I went inside the host’s house so the noise would be muffled). We got to meet and spend time with a lot of the family and it was nice that Grandma Lorna got to see how much bigger Edward has gotten in the 3 weeks since she saw him last. Plus we got photos of Edward and her that we forgot to get when she was here. We took Edward down to the river and were going to dip his toes in, but he decided he was going to stay awake all day (8-4) and then he fell asleep just before we left so he slept the whole time we were at the river.

We were going to come back on the Sunday, but decided to stay an extra day so we would miss all of the holiday traffic. Darrell worked there on Monday and after he finished, we headed home. Unfortunately, Edward slept most of the day on Monday and when we got to Spokane, he decided to start waking up. After that, he was fussy and didn’t want to stay in the carseat. We had to stop a little more often than we would have liked, but he was a happy baby when we took him out of the carseat. We stopped for dinner in Ellensburg and it was the first time I had to nurse him in a restaurant. Definitely a little different, but we did it! 🙂

Best part of the whole weekend: Edward slept for 4 hours at a time the whole weekend except for Saturday night. Saturday was the birthday party and that night, Edward slept for a whole 6 hours. I woke up after 5 hours and was a little worried he hadn’t woken us up yet, but he was fine, so I let him sleep. I felt great that I had gotten so much sleep. It only lasted for the one night, but it gives me something to look forward to. 🙂

The only downside we found from the weekend was a little overstimulation for Edward. He was use to a lot of people paying attention to him and playing with him that Tuesday was rough since he wouldn’t allow us to leave him alone to do anything. He constantly wanted attention and to be near someone. It was a slow process to get him back to being ok with being on his own and we will have to figure something out for next time we visit family.

One Month!

*Granted I am 16 days late, but better late than never?*

So much has changed in the one month since Edward joined our life. He has changed so much and we are excited to experience the next couple months when he starts to become more aware and interactive with us. He has just started to smile in response to us. He doesn’t do it all the time, but when he does, it just melts our hearts. We attempt to get him to do it multiple times in a row so we know it is a response to us instead of gas. 🙂

Breastfeeding has gotten immensely easier. He is getting faster at feeding, so I am only feeding him for 5-10 minutes instead of the 15-20 it was in the beginning. Granted, he still occasionally has a 30 minute session but I have begun to realize that it is more when he just wants to suck and we are trying not to use a pacifier so we are trying to find a nice medium (which mainly means that we use our finger or a soother while sometimes using a pacifier if we get desperate and he is sucking for a long time). He still has the daily cluster feed where he wants to eat every hour for 3-4 hours. Sometimes it drives me nuts because by the time I feed him, burp him, put him down and start to do something, he is hungry again. Luckily, most of the cluster feedings happen at night and Darrell is able to help me do stuff. I pump once a day (in the mornings) so that we have a bottle’s worth of milk in the fridge at a time. If I get frustrated to much during cluster time, Darrell feeds him and then I pump in the morning. If not, then I don’t pump.

Edward is still on a 2-3 hour sleep schedule at night. He is starting to occasionally get a good 4 hour stretch and I wake up feeling recharged. Unfortunately, after the 4am feeding, he doesn’t like to go right back to sleep and wants to stay up, so I am up for about an hour and a half before feeding him again and then he goes back to sleep. I am waiting for that to change again. During the day, he is great and gives me just enough time between feedings to either take an hour nap, make food, or get some chores done. He does a single 4 hour stretch of awake time a day. Usually it is in the morning, but occasionally it is at night. He loves to just lay around and look at the different lights (sunlight and lightbulbs).

He isn’t to fussy and only occasionally does he really wail when we can’t figure out what he needs. I think we have only had about 3 good wails since we left the birth center. Other than that, he mostly cries when he wants to be fed and I am changing his diaper first, but once I pick him up, he stops. He does love to spit-up. We easily go through almost all of our receiving blankets and burp rags in a two day period. Sometimes it only takes a day. We lay them out over a chair to let them air-dry during the day. So it has me doing at least a load of laundry a day (especially with the cloth diapers).

I’m excited for the next few milestones. I know everyone says that they grow up so fast, so I am enjoying each and every moment (even the difficult ones).

Wow!

Well, we have been really busy here in the last month. I have been a slacker and haven’t updated here in almost 3 weeks. Now that Darrell is back to work, I have started to mix eating with checking email and facebook and barely have time for that throughout the day while making sure the house is clean and laundry done. I am working on a couple of posts to update this site, so keep an eye out. Darrell keeps nagging me to get them done and up, so I will try to have it done before the end of the week. 🙂

I will leave you with this for now:

I love this child and all of his faces! 🙂

Week 2 & 3

Sorry I hadn’t updated in a few weeks. We were enjoying our time with Edward while Darrell had time off of work. He went back to work yesterday, so here I am updating what we have been up to. (Mostly just staring at our child whether he is awake or asleep :P). Here are some pictures of what we have been up to for the last two weeks.

The cats are still getting use to Edward. Poleeko hides upstairs under the crib most days and Zedd just stays clear. But they both like getting attention and treats from us.

Occasionally they will get close to the babe and as long as he is sleeping and not moving they are fine. One movement and they are gone.

For our first big outing that wasn’t to a doctors appointment or the grocery store, we went down to the Fremont fair and Solstice parade. We all had a blast and enjoyed listening to the many different marching bands. It was a long 6 hour day for us, but it was fun.
