Taking a break

So, for the next few weeks, there will probably be very few posts from me as we are finishing up our packing to move. This is currently in our driveway waiting for us to load it tomorrow:

Moving Truck

Alas, because we have to load that, which I will not be helping with, I have to pack up the big computer and will not have access to it until we are in our new home. I will have the laptop and might make a few updates, but I’m not putting any pressure on myself. If I don’t keep up, plan to see a lot of posts once we have the computer and internet back up and running in Washington.

Here’s to safe travels!

Our neighbor (also our real estate agent) was kind enough to throw us a baby shower/going away party. We invited almost everyone we knew here in town and many came out for a few minutes or longer. It was nice having a flow of people most of the day. We are really going to miss everyone here and are thankful that we got to know many of them (even though it was only a short time). We got some nice stuff for Sprout from everyone even though many of them gave us a bunch of their hand-me-downs. Once again, we were so busy having fun, we forgot to take pictures. We gave Charlene’s little girl the camera, so we have a lot of shots from a 3-year-old’s perspective. 🙂

We had a blast and it was a nice ending weekend to our time in Abilene. Definitely different than the first weekend we were here. 🙂

Moving

So for the few of you who aren’t on facebook, we are moving early next year!

Darrell is being allowed to work remotely and will be attending the PMP program at UW. We are excited since this means we get to move to Seattle. It is a big change from Texas, but we will handle it and we are really excited.

We will be able to visit family members that right now, we only see every few years. We will be close enough to see them a few times a year instead. We don’t know how long we will be in Seattle, but it is our first big step to moving back to where we want to be.

Our house will be going up on the market in January so that we can sell it before we move. We are hoping to have it sold and move before the end of March so I will still be in my second trimester and it will be easier to find a doctor to take me. We are pretty sure it will sell in that amount of time since houses in our neighborhood are on the market for an average of 60 days. (A house that is exactly like ours sold in 75 days just a few months ago, so we definitely have our fingers crossed.) We just have to fix up the little things we have put off like the carpet in the closet where Poleeko dug to get out, the baseboards in the laundry room that we forgot to have the builder come back and fix, and we have to level the backyard since we just dumped the dirt from the front yard project into it. It is only a couple of fix-ups but with the holidays, we wanted to give ourselves a full month to prep and then market it. We also have to pack up a chunk of the house so it doesn’t look so cluttered. That should be fun. 🙂

So that is our other big news right now. We are completely jazzed because that means we will be able to go visit friends and family with more reasonable timeframes. Darrell is ready to just pack and go, so as soon as our house is closed on, we are outta here!! 🙂

We had a very busy weekend this weekend. We had been procrastinating on a couple ideas in our head and we finally had the money to just go ahead and do it. It probably didn’t help that we found some awesome deals so it cost us about half of what we thought it would end up costing us. Yeah!!!

So first project on Saturday was to install a cat door. We had been talking for awhile about moving the litterbox to the garage and installing a cat door so that they will have access to the garage. Plus it would allow us to use our Guest bathroom when people come to visit instead of them having to shower in our bathroom. Needless to say it was a little bit more of a feat than we thought it would be. Turns out Darrell didn’t have quite the right tools for it, so we ended up buying him another tool. But we got it installed in only a few hours. Now the big step is to get the cats to actually use it before we move the litterbox. So far they will only go through it if we have it taped open.

After we put in the cat door and spent some time trying to lure the cats through, it got to cold in the garage, so we came inside.

We have lived in our house for just over 2.5 years and we have only had sheets over our windows (college style). We had been talking about putting in curtains, but never before found curtains we both liked. We were at Lowe’s getting Darrell’s new tool for the cat door and we stopped to look at the curtains that we liked, but weren’t sold on quite yet because of the price. Well, some of the curtains that we liked happened to be on a massive sale for over 50% off. Yes!!! So we went ahead and bought them and Darrell installed our bedroom ones last night so we could see how dark it would keep our room in the morning since our room windows face East.

We were pretty pleased with the way they look. They are thermal blackout curtains. They still let a little bit of light in around the edges, but nowhere near as much as the sheets were letting in. This morning we decided that we really liked them, so when Darrell took a break from studying, he went ahead and put the rest of the curtains up. We put the same curtains in the Guest bedroom.

Then we put up the curtains that we got for more than 50% off. Those went in the Kitchen and the office because they blocked the glare, but they aren’t blackout curtains, so light still comes through.

Overall, we are very, very happy with the way that they turned out. It is always exciting to mark something off your list that has been there for over 2 years. It gives us some sense of adultness. 🙂

That’s pretty much all we have had time for this weekend. We did a lot of running around on Saturday, but we got a lot done and are pleased with our results thus far. (Just have to get those cats trained :P)

Tomorrow morning is our bi-weekly trip to Ft. Worth. We get to see Sprout again and are excited and hoping for some nice growth.

We had an awesome weekend in Austin!! We had originally planned to leave Abilene at 5pm on Friday to slowly make our way down to Austin, but our plans changed. My dad called me around 8:30 that morning and said that they would be in Abilene around 5pm. I love getting to see my Dad and I don’t get to see him that often. So we pushed back our departure time to 6(ish).

Dad and Uncle Mike showed up at 5 and so we hung out for about an hour and then let them crash at our house to get some rest before finishing their load back to California. They always seem to stop by when we have stuff planned, but they never know where their loads are going to take them until last minute. Hopefully next time we will be home with nothing planned. 🙂

We finally left Abilene around 6:15 and headed straight for the hotel. We stayed in Downtown Austin so we could mostly walk places. We got to the hotel around 10:30 pm. After we checked in, we headed out to get some dinner and walk around on Sixth Street. It was fun. It really reminded us of Bourbon street in New Orleans. It was ridiculously crowded. We walked Sixth street and then we decided to head down to Fourth Street and the Warehouse district. I got tired, so I walked back to the hotel and Darrell and our friend Drew stayed and hung out for another hour and a half till the bars closed. They seemed to have a fabulous time.

On Saturday we just hung around and didn’t do much in the morning. I watched TV quietly while the guys slept. Darrell and I went up to brunch around 10:30. After brunch we decided to go check out the Gay Pride Festival that Austin had going on. We drove over there and hung out for a couple of hours. It was fun. There were a lot of different booths, a drag queen singing, lots of games, and all around fun times.

After the Pride Festival, we headed back to the hotel to rest and cool down for a little bit before heading to Lady Bird Johnson Lake for the Bat Cruise which was the main reason we went to Austin. Last year Kelly and Carla went with us. This year, Tim, Dana, and Drew joined us. It was fun. The boat went the other way up the river before the bats, so we got to see a different side of Austin.

We went under the bridge and were able to look up and see the cracks on the bottom of the bridge where the bats roost. The stains are the bat guano and it is stinky and loud under there. The story is that they wanted to widen Congress Street Bridge, but they didn’t want to get rid of the current bridge. So instead, they cut the current bridge into slices and then left the gaps underneath and filled them up top. That’s where the bats decided they would roost. They are Mexican Free-tail bats. There are about 1.5 million of them under the bridge.

We got off of the Bat Cruise and started heading back to our hotel, but I forgot that the Gay Pride Parade was going on, so we ended up spending probably close to an hour in traffic. When we finally made it to the hotel, a friend of Cory’s, Sa’ndor, was waiting and we headed out to dinner with him. It was fun. I tried the fish and chips at the pub, but it still didn’t match up to the fish and chips from California that I am use to. :/ We hung out in downtown Austin again until close to midnight.

Sunday was just a day to relax and head back home. We went out to Juan and a Million for breakfast (cheap!!!). Then we checked out of the hotel and were trying to decide on where to go. We ended up going to South Congress food trucks for some cupcakes first. 🙂 Darrell got the Double Dose which is Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting. I got the Sweetberry which is Strawberry cake with Strawberry cream cheese frosting. If you are ever in the Austin area, I highly recommend this food truck.

We sat around and ate our cupcakes and then we decided to go check out Barton Springs to see if it was really crowded since it was a hot day. Barton Springs is awesome!! It is built around an aquifer and not treated at all. It is like a river swimming pool. The water was really cold, and the ground was really slippery. I took my time getting in and didn’t spend much time there. Darrell jumped in and headed over to the diving board and did a couple dives. It was nice and relaxing for the few hours we spent there.

Then we began our trek home. We headed back through Fredericksburg so we could get some dinner and because we love the town of Fredericksburg. 🙂 We always stop and eat at the Brewing Company and they have an awesome German Potato Salad. Yummy!!!

So that was what we spent this weekend doing. It was fun and we were a little sad to see Sunday end so fast. But it was all around a great time. Next time we head down to Austin, I am thinking that Barton Springs will be on our list again.
